Em 1996, Dwayne estreava na luta-livre profissional, com o nome de ringue Rocky Maivia, em homenagem a seu pai e seu avô, respectivamente. Ele começou logo numa das maiores ligas da época, a World Wrestling Federation (WWF, que hoje é conhecida como a WWE).
Seu primeiro título na companhia também não demorou a chegar: já em 1997, ele conquistou o título de Campeão Intercontinental, derrotando um tal de Triple H, um dos lutadores mais famosos da história da franquia.
